Molen in Kinderdijk

São 19 moinhos em Kinderdijk. Eles não servem pra moer trigo e fazer farinha, mas pra bombear água pra fora de "polders". Isso são áreas represadas que foram secadas - através da força dos ventos que giram as pás dos moinhos. Os moinhos ainda funcionam hoje como bombeadores de água, mas dessa vez é pra controlar o nível das águas e evitar inundações.

There are 19 windmills in Kinderdijk. They do not make flour out of wheat, but pump the water out of "polders". These are surfaces of dammed water that were dried - through the force of the winds turning the mills. Nowadays the mills work as water-level-controllers and aid in the flood prevention.

As pás podem ser cobertas com a lona ou não, depende da força do vento.

The sails can be covered with a cloth or not, depending on the intensity of the winds.

As ruas são feitas de água, a energia vem do vento, e as pessoas moram em construções que convertem potência em energia, pra se manter acima do nível da água.
The streets are made of water, the energy comes from the wind, people live in buildings that converse power into energy, in order to keep themselves above water level.

Às vezes o interior do moinho é muito pouco pra uma vida confortável, então os moradores acrescentam uma casinha ali, um barco aqui e uma rede acolá.

Sometimes the inside of a mill is not enough for a comfortable life, so the inhabitants add a small house to the mill, a boat there and a hammock over there.

Esse moinho tem um formato diferente. Parece mais um moinho colocado em cima do topo do telhado de uma casa. Mas é isso mesmo que são esses moinhos: a parte de cima é até mesmo móvel, conforme o vento. Todo o eixo em que está a escada externa termina num leme que pode ser movimentado.

This mill has a different shape. It looks more like a mill on top of the rooftop of a house. But that is exactly what these mills are about: the top can be moved according to the direction of the wind. The whole axe where you see the external stairs end in a steering wheel that can be moved.
